March 12, 2018

Safety is one of the four Core Values at Power Line Services. It is fundamental to the way we work and live. Our hope is that by sharing a few of our safety discussions we get others to start talking about workplace safety too – so that ultimately at the end of the day, we can all go home safe.

Safety Discussion: Why Accidents Happen…

Every Accident is caused by a Breakdown in One of Four Areas: the worker, the tools used, the materials used, or the methods used. Often the breakdown in at least two areas: one being the worker and the other coming from one of the three other areas listed above. The accident is usually caused by an unsafe act or unsafe condition.

Types of Unsafe ActsOperating without authority, working at dangerous speeds, unsafe loading or placing of materials, using unsafe postures or positions, taking shortcuts or using old tricks/methods, and failure to properly use equipment and/or PPE.

Reasons Unsafe Acts Happen: Lack of knowledge/skill, rushing through a task, improper attitude, absence of appropriate housekeeping, or the improper evaluation of site conditions.

Group Safety Discussion Questions: Think of an Unsafe Act you may have seen or heard to have happened at a past employer: What was the reason it happened? If that accident happened to you, how would it affect your life? How can you prevent it from happening today?
